Automatic and manual targeting are tools with different jobs. The useful decision is how each one supports your advertising objective—not which one wins in every situation.
What each option does
With automatic targeting, Amazon matches ads using product information and shopping signals. Manual targeting lets you choose keywords or product targets. Automatic campaigns can surface opportunities to investigate; manual campaigns let you organise selected targets more deliberately.
Give each campaign a clear brief
Before creating another campaign, write one sentence explaining its purpose. For example: “Explore relevant searches for this product within an agreed test budget.” Another brief might be: “Manage a defined set of product-specific searches.” If you cannot explain the difference between two campaigns, consider whether the structure is adding useful control.
A brand selling insulated lunch bags uses a discovery campaign to investigate shopper interest. A relevant search appears in its report. The team checks the actual product fit and the evidence behind that search before deciding whether to test it in a dedicated manual campaign. No outcome is guaranteed by moving a target.
Review before expanding
A promising result is a reason to investigate, not an instruction to copy every search into another campaign. Ask whether the result is repeatable, whether the spend is meaningful and whether you have enough budget to learn from the new test. Keep a note of the reason for each addition.
Use exclusions with intent
Negative targeting can exclude unwanted keyword or product matches. Apply it for a clear reason. Do not automatically block every term that has not yet produced an order, or assume that campaign overlap always needs eliminating.
A simple working checklist
- Assign a specific purpose and spending boundary.
- Use a consistent naming system.
- Review search and target relevance.
- Document additions, exclusions and bid changes.
- Assess progress against the original brief.
